The Oil Spill in our Souls

Greg Stier
Greg Stier

All of our hearts are breaking as we have watched the Gulf fill up with oil. It is devastating to see God’s creation marred through human mistakes. I don’t know about you but I cringe every time I see the underwater videos of thousands upon thousands of barrels of oil spewing into the ocean…and if I see one more oil covered crane, turtle or crab I think I’ll puke. It’s simple horrible.

BP better stand for “Big Plug” because that’s just what they need right now. Put a cork in it guys. This is getting ridiculous.

But today, as I’ve been thinking about the man-made disaster under the sea, I can’t help but correlate it to another human-triggered disaster.

It all started with a company called AE. They were responsible, not to drill under water, but to take care of a garden. But when AE ate fruit from the wrong tree an unstoppable gusher erupted from the depths of their souls and polluted their entire beings.

Adam and Eve were the original BP.

But before you blame them for all the wrongs in the world (like a lot of people are doing with BP) stop and take a look at your own soul, as I will with mine.

What unchecked sin in your soul that is gushing into the ocean of your heart? What sin is destroying the environment of your divine habitat? Lust, pride, arrogance, gossip, anger or something else?

If we could see the “google view” from heaven into our souls the sinful spill in our lives would make BP’s blunder like a drop in the bucket.

I want to, through the power of the finished work of Christ on the cross and his resurrection from the dead, plug that gushing hole in my soul. I’m tired of what it is doing to me and to those around me.

So before we throw too many dispersions at BP let’s plug our own man-made disaster in the deepest parts of our hearts.
